Q 1)    Who wrote the poem “The Deserted Village”? Write few lines about him.

This pastoral poem “The Deserted Village” was composed by Oliver Goldsmith. He was an Irish novelist, playwright, poet, and physician known for his novel “The Vicar of Wakefield”. The most important thing that made him notable and special is his easiest and graceful pattern to write and convey his message through his work. His first writing that had been published under his own name was “The Traveler” which gave him great success and fame too.


Q 2)    Briefly describe the beauty of Auburn before it was deserted.

The poet ‘Oliver Goldsmith’ praises the real beauty of his village named “Auburn”. He believed that the real beauty of his village was the happiest moments full of cheeriness and happiness. The content life which was led by the people of that village in spite of hard work was the charm of that village. They have different games to play and enjoy which were normally played under the tree in their leisure time which would be the best source to keep them alive and playful.

Q 3)    What used to happen in the village, Auburn when the villagers got free from their work?

When the villagers got free from all their works they all gathered at the decided place that is under the calm shade of the tree to play various games to celebrate and enjoy. Clever tricks of arts and strength had been shown. Dancing pairs tried to tire others and to gain fame. Younger played there while the elders were used to watch them by sitting there. Some people’s faces were blackened without his knowledge and those all were the sources of their never-ceasing happiness.

The poet remembered and described all of the natural beauties and the things which have been converted into the part of his beautiful memories. Among those some things have been highlighted by him included sheltered cottages, the cultivated farms and everlasting streams, mills, hills and the church etc. He also remembered some sports games and activities which have been performed during their leisure time.

That village is exactly situated in the South of England which has been deserted because of some monetary advantages. The poet recalled his life of his native village because of the happy, content and the most satisfactory life of him and all of the villagers.

The poet symbols the depopulation which has been brought about through the flight of its peasant society and the arrival of monopolizing riches. He pays tributes to the peasants of England and mourns over that state of society “Where wealth accumulates and man decay” and says the framer is the real pride for any country. He thinks that conditions of those peasants had been directed towards the worse and their content life is going to be vanished just because of the order of the landlords in the greed of some money but once that peasants have been destroyed and ruined so they cannot be gotten the return back because they have no substitute.
