THE MAN OF LIFE UPRIGHT

(Thomas Campion)

The poem The Man of Life Upright is true words carries profound thoughts and feelings of the poet Thomas Campion. The poem offers the concept of an ideal personality, leading a highly disciplined and controlled life. He is a master of himself.

The pure and true heart of an upright man is free from wrong thoughts and intentions. He leads his life in great happiness. He has total control over his whims and wishes. As a result, material loss and problems fail to disturb him.

He is self-reliant, confident and courageous. He does not count on power or material resources. In a battle, he depends upon God and seeks help from him. He does not have strong forts, weapons of war or secret cellars for his safety.

This man faces the natural calamities such as stormy winds, heavy rains and tempest calmly and courageously. His faith in God remains firm and unshaken.

The poet says that this main shows complete indifference to the happy and unhappy events of Life. He is aware that all worldly things and events are temporary and worthless. He seeks knowledge from the heavenly books and study of the objects of Nature adds to his wisdom and refines his intellect.

The poet says that the man of upright life considers the world a place for a short while. It no more than a temporary abode, without any glamour or charm. He believes that his good deeds are his only wealth and earning. When called upon by God, he will have to start the journey to the next eternal life.

Q1- How the man of life upright spends his life?

Ans.  According to “Thomas Campion” a man of character spends his life with spiritual-peace and satisfaction. He is not indulged in extra activities. He does not care about the discontents and miseries of the world. He faces all the difficulties bravely and does not get rid of the challenges of life. He is a close observer of nature so he gets the knowledge from it. In his leisure time, he studies a good book. As his life is ideal for others so when he leaves this world everybody remembers him in their prayers.

Q2- Briefly describes in your own words the character of Campion upright man.

Ans. An upright man is innocent. He does not commit and avoid himself to be proud. He enjoys his life and does not care about any sort of misery. As he is not a criminal so he does not hide in cells. He is fearless and faces everybody boldly. He does not despair on those misfortunes that come in his life by fate. He always gets wisdom from nature. His thinking is positive and at last, he says goodbye to the people of this world. He leaves this world as a pious person.

Q3- What does the poet mean by the “Silent says” in the poem “The Man of life upright”?

Ans.  In the poem “The man of life upright” the poet “Thomas Campion’s ideal man spends his life peacefully. He is not harmed by anybody because he also does not make hurdles in others life. He is also not worried about the sorrows that his fortune brings. He is not like a person who builds the castles in the air. Due to all these qualities, this man is satisfied and spends his life peacefully.
